Get Your Child To Clean Their Teeth

Are you one of the many parents that has to keep telling your children to brush their teeth?  As parents we know the importance of clean teeth but often our children think it's boring and try to skip this part of the daily routine.  Here's an idea I thought might interest you.

Review ~ Beyond Toddlerdom Tips by Dr. Christopher Green

I bought many books on parenting when my son was very small, now I tend to trust my own insticts.  I was recently having a sort out of my books and came across a little book that I love.  Dr. Christopher Green is a straight talking, practical kind of guy. There are no 'To be a perfect parent...' statements in hear, just common sense tips to keeping your 5 to 12 year olds on the rails (as he puts it).

Here are his top 15 secrets to successful parenting.

  1. Be available
  2. Routine and structure
  3. Consistent limits and rules
  4. Flexibility and compromise
  5. Choice and freedom
  6. Communicate early
  7. Ask, don't nag
  8. Notice the good
  9. Reward good behaviour
  10. Subtle rewards are the best
  11. Confrontation causes resentment
  12. Calm spreads calm
  13. Cool off and regain control
  14. Forgive and move on
  15. Don't stir up the animal
Dr. Christopher Green is one of Britain's best known parenting authors.  The thing I like so much about his writing is that he has learned from the parents he has worked with.

I've had this book around 3 years now and it's looking well worn to say the least.  Picking it up again today I know this is a book that was well worth the money.  It saved me many, many headaches.

Toddler Taming is another superb book by Dr. Christopher Green it's a parents' guide to the first four years of your childs life.

FREE Parenting With The Law Of Attraction Coaching Trial

BIG NEWS and a GREAT OPPORTUNITY.

I have been asked to put together a program to help parents understand how to use the law of attraction and how to share it with their children.

I am going to be running a trial of this program (it will all be done by email sessions). I am offering it completely free of charge for the first 20 people who sign up for the program. You will then form my trial group to work through this program and help me iron out any areas that need more attention, etc.

You will also have access to my Private Focus Group so that you can share your experiences with other people who are also following the program.

There are (approx) 21 sessions. Whilst there is no strict time scale to complete each session I would like anyone signing up for the trial to be fully committed and able to set aside some time every day or so to work on the sessions. Most sessions only take a few minutes to read through and most can be done as ongoing projects. Sometimes all you need to do is take note of your thoughts, etc.

Go straight to http://www.loaliving.com/ and sign up now if you're interested.  This is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in something that will not only change your life, it will change your childrens too.

Happy Parenting

Playing with Your Child – How to Start It, Why It’s So Important

I'm delighted to be sharing this wonderful article with you by the wonderful Winsome Coutts.  Parenting with this lady on your side is much nicer and you're kids will thank you for taking the time to get to know her.  Well okay maybe they won't thank you but they will benifit from it.

Playing with Your Child – How to Start It, Why It’s So Important

In these busy times, when parents and children have schedules packed to the max, family closeness can fall by the wayside. Most of us have to make an effort to guarantee that work, school, sports, and chores don’t swallow up the very relationships that make those things important.

When is the last time you played or goofed around with your child? Can you remember back that far? Many parents can’t. Life has made us so serious, so focused, that we’ve lost the joy of the simple things, and play was one of the first to go.

But as any child instinctively knows, play is essential to life. It brightens the heart and lightens the spirit. For kids, who live closer than we do to nature, play is as spontaneous as breathing. Sadly, most grown-ups have lost that skill. Our children can be our refresher course.

Playing with your child brings you back to the present, reminds you of what matters, and slows you down long enough to smell the roses. It also connects you emotionally with your child, rebuilding the closeness that the fast-paced, boring routines of life are all too quick to strip away.

Playing together is even more important for your child than it is for you, because she needs to feel close to you to feel loved and happy. If you’ve neglected time together for long enough, it may appear that your child isn’t interested in your attentions. She may even tell you as much. But that’s just bluster, hiding the fear that you will disappoint her again if she lets herself wish for time alone with you. If you initiate playing together, and do it at frequent intervals, even the most aloof pre-teen will start to look forward to it and, in time, throw herself into the fun.

What kind of playing should you do? Pay attention to the activities your child engages in: his idea of enjoyment. If these things seem boring to you, try hanging out nearby, observing as he does them, with words that express your curiosity. You just may find you actually develop a genuine interest. If your child is a couch potato, take up your perch on the couch beside him, but after you’re allowed “in,” initiate some play that might be more pleasant than TV.

Think back to what you did as a child that was memorable, especially activities you did with your parents that stay with you still. Think about things that are free or cost little, that involve experiencing life together. Start a list of ideas as they come, and add any of the following that you resonate with:

■Raking stacks of autumn leaves, then jumping or rolling in them

■Taking a hike through the forest preserve

■Skating at the roller rink together

■Walking the dog, taking turns with the rope

■Reading comics or joke books together (or books of poetry or stories)

■Making cookies, pizza or a cake

■Building a fort out of snow or chairs and blankets

■Playing hide and seek, hide the thimble, cards or board games

■Lying on a blanket looking up at the stars

■Sitting in front of the wood stove in a dark room, telling stories

■Making shadow figures on the wall with your hands and a flashlight

■Having a treasure hunt

■Roasting marshmallows over a fire

■Watching a parade

■Going to the aquarium, zoo or museum

■Flying kites together

■Building something

■Making a scrapbook

■Making up a silly poem or song

■Watching a movie, with popcorn and no interruptions

■Playing a memory game, like “I’m going to Grandma’s house, and in my suitcase I’m going to pack …”

■Getting up early to watch the sunrise from a hill

■Playing games of pretend

■Going somewhere special, like the beach

■Having a pancake picnic in the snow

Playing together is different than finding entertaining activities for your child. Play involves you, while entertainment excuses you from the picture. If you find yourself saying, “But my schedule is too busy for any of the things on that list,” consider whether your schedule needs some pruning. After all, who’s going to remember in 20 years if you stay late at work or not next Tuesday? But will your child ever forget the Tuesday you ride the rollercoaster together?

Closeness with a child cannot be taken for granted. Like any other relationship, it will slip away unless it’s made a priority. Nothing builds trust and bonding with a child like sharing a moment of silliness and laughter. Come together for light-hearted play, and you just may find your child opens up about serious subjects. The relaxed atmosphere of play helps us let our guard down and reveal more of ourselves.

When you play together, let your child feel like the most important person in your world. Give him your undivided attention: no cell phones, no interruptions, no slipping into your own private thoughts. Be present – body, mind and spirit. Then let yourself do whatever comes naturally, with the abandon you felt when you yourself were a child. Your instincts will be your guide.

Growing closer through play is easy. It just takes dedicated moments, given on a fairly regular basis, so your child begins to count on having time with you.

Let your child re-teach you the wonderful secrets of play. You both will feel more secure and peaceful – and a whole lot happier, as the reason you do it all for, starts to come back to you.

What Would You Do Differntly?

I just watched the most amazing video.  The name of the video is 'If I had to raise my child again.'
I've watched three times so far and cried every time.  Mmm, Jack would call me a wuss.  He got that from the ice age movie by the way.  Anyway I wanted to share it with you today.  It's only quite short so it will not take much of your time but it will (I'm sure) have a long lasting impact on your relationship with your child.

Watch it here

I'd love to hear what you think.

Happy parenting as always, Wendy x

Check out Jack's Puppy Blog.

I had some information sent through to me last week about Teen Cash Machine which is an program designed for teen to set up websites to generate money for themselves.  Even though my son Jack is only 9 (soon to be ten) I thought I'd take a look.  I firmly believe the internet is the way forward for  our children and it's something I love too.  I clicked onto the video presentation which explained everything.  Very interesting.  Anyway a couple of days later I received another short video of the creators daughter (age 11) who has used the program checking out how much money she's made.  She was super excited. Jack happened to be in the room and obviously picked up on what I was watching and asked me to play it again.  I did and then I showed him the first video too.  His response was "Can I get it mum, PLEEEAASE!"

I talked it over with him and also with my husband.  We decided as he was only 9 that I would help him to create a blog and see if he enjoyed it.  The deal is if he likes it and sticks with it we will buy him the Teen Cash Machine program for his birthday in April.

He's super excited and delighted with his blog Puppy from the Pound. Please come and take a look and show your support.  http://puppyfromthepound.blogspot.com/

Thanks

How To Raise happy and Conscious Kids

As parent, teacher or caregiver, do you ever wonder how you can really help your kids reach their highest potential?  I know I certainly do.
We have some unique challenges in our society that can leave us feeling overwhelmed and unsure on how to help our kids to be happy and healthy, inside and out.

Soaring childhood obesity rates, child/teen depression, peer pressure, academic pressure, competitive sports (and the increased rate of injury of late!), the internet and social media and their challenges, lack of sleep, feeling wiped or wired, along with violence on TV and video games. On top of all this, our teachers are being asked to do more with less, while class sizes increase!

Since giving up on our children is not an option… I am so excited to tell you about a TeleSeminar Series specifically designed for parents, teachers and caregivers called the Raising Conscious Kids TeleSummit! http://www.1shoppingcart.com/app/?Clk=4268131

The speaker lineup is amazing and includes Marianne Williamson, Sonia Choquette, Matthew Ferry, Sharon Wilson, Patrick McMillan…plus 7 more wonderful experts. http://www.1shoppingcart.com/app/?Clk=4268131

It’s designed to help you get a game plan on how to solve many of the challenges faced by parents, teachers and caregivers.

Here are some of the topics being covered:

* How to make your parenting more easy and effective

Learning Is Supposed To Be Fun

When learning is fun it's so much easier to understand, even as an adult that's true. Because we live in Spain and my 9 year old son attends a local Catalan/Spanish speaking school I am always looking for ways to keep his English learning at a good level.  He reads lots of books and we speak in English at home but we know to keep the level high he needs more than this.  I see so many English living here who do not have a good command of the English language.

My son loves the computer, so an internet based learning program is ideal for him combined with other activities we already do.  I found a program called K5 Stars that looks so much fun and there is a free report and free trial offer available at the moment.  I knew I had to share this with you all.  I think we all like free offers now and then, especially when it helps our children.

Looks like a whole load of fun to me.

Playtime Issues, Recorder Practice, Jigsaws and a Puppy

This week seems to have rushed by, It certainly seems to have got to Friday very quickly. I love the weekends though so I'm fine with that.

This week Jack has had a problem with a boy at school.  The boy in question told Jack he was not allowed to play with him and the rest of the kids Jack usually plays with.  Icould see this situation was really bothering my son (9).

I asked my son to keep saying this positive affirmation.  I'm a great kid and I have lots of wonderful friends.  I always have lots of people toplay with at break time.

I asked him to imagine playing his favourite games at break time with his normal friends and I also asked him to welcome in other kids.

The boy kept doing the same thing throughout the week but it had no where near the same impact on Jack or the other kids.

While Jack is at school I also affirm that jack is a great kid, he is happy and confident, he makes friends easily and he attracts wonderful friends who like him just the way he is.

I also did some role play with Jack and helped him with posture to project a positive image.  A wonderful resource and a real breakthrough in this area is Izzy Kalman's website http://www.bullies2buddies.com/

Recorder Practice

Today Jack is having a friend over for lunch.  They have a music project to complete which means they have to practice asong on the recorder this afternoon.  I have to admit I'm not looking forward to that.  I think I'll suggest they practice in Jack's room.

Jigsaws and Puppies Do Not Go Well Together!

What was I thinking?  Obviously not a lot when I decided to buy a 1000 piece Simpsons jigsaw puzzle.  Our puppy has eaten or chewed at least 20 pieces.  I'm determined to finish it today, perhaps I'll get it done whilst Jack and his friend do recorder practice.

Happy weekend wishes to you all.

Here's Lola - Our beautiful Jigsaw piece eating puppy.

Fiesta Day Today.

Here in Spain we are having a local fiesta which mean I've got my little fella at home today.  It's a cold and reainy day with strong winds, so were not venturing out, other than to take the dog out to play.  She's still not able to go out for a proper walk yet so it's just running around the garden for her exercise.

Here's Jack enjoying his favourite Japonese meal (noodles)

So far this morning we've competed in Club Penguin sports day, tackled the jigsaw we started yesterday (1000 pieces), stopped the dog from eating at least 20 things she's not supposed to eat, watched Nick toons, saved a polar bear and climbed a pyramid whilst fighting off mummies.  I wonder what the rest of the day will bring.

In between all our excitement I managed to write an article you might enjoy reading.  Tips to create peaceful school mornings.

Hypnosis Help with First Day at School Anxiety

My own son was three year old (far too early in my opinion and I would never do this again.  I just went along with the rules at the time) when he started school.  I loved having my son at home with me and was devastated when he started school.  It took my son weeks to settle into school and I remember crying most mornings.

My friends ay HypnosisDownloads.com have created a wonderful download First Day at School Separation Anxiety

I wish I'd had this.  I know this will be a wonderful resource for parents and children facing this challenging time later this year.

I'm a huge fan of Hypnosis downloads and over the past few years have built up quite a library to help me live a wonderful life.

Helping kids release fear with EFT

I found this wonderful EFT video from Brad Yates and I had to share it with you.  I'm very familiar with Brad and his work.  He is particularly famous for his programs Money Beyond Belief, Confidence Beyond Belief and Body Beyond Belief.

This video however is for children.  All children I have ever known (as an ex-nursery school worker that's a lot), feel afraid from time to time.  This video will release those fears and help your child to feel calm.

New Puppy

Well it's been a roller coaster ride with our lovely new puppy Lola.  We got her from the local dog rescue center.  She's five months old and a labrador/pointer cross (we think).  We had her her in our home for just 6 days before she had to have a stay at the vet's.  She had parvovirus which is an incredibly dangerous dog illness.  The vet explained the situation and there I was with our new puppy that Jack (age 9) had bought with his own money, being asked if I wanted to go with the treatment which I was told could easily result in her dying and was very expensiveor we could put her to sleep there and then.  Needless to say I was in floods of tears.  We had to give her a chance.  The first 72 hours were critical to her survival.  We said we had to give her at least the 72 hours.  So she stayed at the vets on a drip to make her better.  We visited her often and prayed she would be home healthy and strong soon.  We said positive affirmation and visualized her running around the garden.
I'm happy to say after the 72 hours were up she had made a full recovery and is now home, happy and healthy.  She's one very loved puppy.  Now we just need to work out how to convince her 5.30am is not playtime in our home.  Any ideas?

Books

I love books and I'm delighted to say Jack share my passion.  He's a book fanatic.  I wanted to tell you about a brilliant book I bought him for Christmas.  It's the Nat Geo Kids infopedia (almanac in USA) and it's absolutely packed with the most wonderful information.  It's the sort of book that all ages love and you can pick it up for a couple of minutes or an hour.  If your kids love information and books this one is a must.

I got my copy from Amaon.co.uk but I know it's available on Amazon.com too.

This is the same one on Amazon.com

They do new ones every year and we got last years when we were in Florida on holiday.  He's usually got them both either in the car or at the side (or in) his bed.

Well, I'd better get myself moving.  The sun has finally come out so I'd better go and put the washing out.

Happy Parenting.

Using EFT With Children.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is an extremelly powerful technique to use with children.  It can be used for pretty much anything.  Including:

  • Helping children to feel calm
  • Helping with school issues
  • Helping with friends issues
  • Helping to feel well (clear headaches, tummy aches, etc)
  • Helping to sleep better
  • Help with sports
This is just an example.  EFT can be used for so many things.  If you have something you or your child needs help with EFT is well worth trying.

Tappy Bear is an interactive bear that helps children use EFT.  Parents can use the bear with their child and the child can use the bear alone to use EFT for themselves.  Children quickly learn how to use this powerful technique themselves with a lovable, cuddly friend.

For more information on EFT and Tappy Bear click on the link below.  Be sure to sign up for their free newsletters.  There are some lovely stories about Tappy Bear and friends too.

What Are The Rules?

I'm not really keen on the word rules.  It makes me sound like a strict headmistress.  However in my life, with my family and in my home, I need rules.  I've tried it without and I just feel out of control and my family suffer, especially my son.  He is so much happier when he knows the rules or a nicer way to say this is, he is happier when he know what is expected of him.
Let your children know what the ground rules are. Be clear about what you want.

Our children love to make us happy (most of the time).  If they know what is expected of them, what we want from them life becomes easier and happier.

I don't have a massive list of rules and the ones I do have are incredibly basic.

  • Speak politely
  • Treat people with respect
  • Be kind to others
  • Be kind to our pets
  • If you get things out,put them away.
  • Take care of your own things
  • Help keep our home tidy and clean
These are for all members of our family.

Jack also has a few little rules that help him stay organized for school.
  • Sort school bag out as soon as he comes home
  • Homework before play
  • Pack bag for the next day.
This is what works for me and my family.  I've tried different ideas over the years and as Jack grows we make changes but this pretty much sums up our family rules.

Sure Jack will get a pile of things out and trash my living room but he knows I want and expect him to clear them before he starts something new.  Sometimes he doesn't want to do his homework but he knows he can't play, watch tv, etc until it's done.

This is Jack helping out in the garden.  He's doing it because he likes it not because I tell him he has to.

Now there are always days where some rules go out of the window and that's okay.  I'll talk about being flexible in my next post.

My message here is simple.  If you let your kids know what you want in a calm and consistent manner.  The chances are most of the time you'll get it.  The added bonus is a happy child who feels safe.

That's all for today.

Happy Parenting

A Happy and Positive Start to 2011
