Review ~ Beyond Toddlerdom Tips by Dr. Christopher Green

I bought many books on parenting when my son was very small, now I tend to trust my own insticts.  I was recently having a sort out of my books and came across a little book that I love.  Dr. Christopher Green is a straight talking, practical kind of guy. There are no 'To be a perfect parent...' statements in hear, just common sense tips to keeping your 5 to 12 year olds on the rails (as he puts it).

Here are his top 15 secrets to successful parenting.

  1. Be available
  2. Routine and structure
  3. Consistent limits and rules
  4. Flexibility and compromise
  5. Choice and freedom
  6. Communicate early
  7. Ask, don't nag
  8. Notice the good
  9. Reward good behaviour
  10. Subtle rewards are the best
  11. Confrontation causes resentment
  12. Calm spreads calm
  13. Cool off and regain control
  14. Forgive and move on
  15. Don't stir up the animal
Dr. Christopher Green is one of Britain's best known parenting authors.  The thing I like so much about his writing is that he has learned from the parents he has worked with.

I've had this book around 3 years now and it's looking well worn to say the least.  Picking it up again today I know this is a book that was well worth the money.  It saved me many, many headaches.

Toddler Taming is another superb book by Dr. Christopher Green it's a parents' guide to the first four years of your childs life.

FREE Parenting With The Law Of Attraction Coaching Trial

BIG NEWS and a GREAT OPPORTUNITY.

I have been asked to put together a program to help parents understand how to use the law of attraction and how to share it with their children.

I am going to be running a trial of this program (it will all be done by email sessions). I am offering it completely free of charge for the first 20 people who sign up for the program. You will then form my trial group to work through this program and help me iron out any areas that need more attention, etc.

You will also have access to my Private Focus Group so that you can share your experiences with other people who are also following the program.

There are (approx) 21 sessions. Whilst there is no strict time scale to complete each session I would like anyone signing up for the trial to be fully committed and able to set aside some time every day or so to work on the sessions. Most sessions only take a few minutes to read through and most can be done as ongoing projects. Sometimes all you need to do is take note of your thoughts, etc.

Go straight to http://www.loaliving.com/ and sign up now if you're interested.  This is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in something that will not only change your life, it will change your childrens too.

"It's not only children who grow. Parents do too. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours. I can't tell my children to reach for the sun. All I can do is reach for it, myself." ~Joyce Maynard

What Would You Do Differntly?

I just watched the most amazing video.  The name of the video is 'If I had to raise my child again.'
I've watched three times so far and cried every time.  Mmm, Jack would call me a wuss.  He got that from the ice age movie by the way.  Anyway I wanted to share it with you today.  It's only quite short so it will not take much of your time but it will (I'm sure) have a long lasting impact on your relationship with your child.

Watch it here

I'd love to hear what you think.

Playtime Issues, Recorder Practice, Jigsaws and a Puppy

This week seems to have rushed by, It certainly seems to have got to Friday very quickly. I love the weekends though so I'm fine with that.

This week Jack has had a problem with a boy at school.  The boy in question told Jack he was not allowed to play with him and the rest of the kids Jack usually plays with.  Icould see this situation was really bothering my son (9).

I asked my son to keep saying this positive affirmation.  I'm a great kid and I have lots of wonderful friends.  I always have lots of people toplay with at break time.

I asked him to imagine playing his favourite games at break time with his normal friends and I also asked him to welcome in other kids.

The boy kept doing the same thing throughout the week but it had no where near the same impact on Jack or the other kids.

While Jack is at school I also affirm that jack is a great kid, he is happy and confident, he makes friends easily and he attracts wonderful friends who like him just the way he is.

I also did some role play with Jack and helped him with posture to project a positive image.  A wonderful resource and a real breakthrough in this area is Izzy Kalman's website http://www.bullies2buddies.com/

Recorder Practice

Today Jack is having a friend over for lunch.  They have a music project to complete which means they have to practice asong on the recorder this afternoon.  I have to admit I'm not looking forward to that.  I think I'll suggest they practice in Jack's room.

Jigsaws and Puppies Do Not Go Well Together!

What was I thinking?  Obviously not a lot when I decided to buy a 1000 piece Simpsons jigsaw puzzle.  Our puppy has eaten or chewed at least 20 pieces.  I'm determined to finish it today, perhaps I'll get it done whilst Jack and his friend do recorder practice.

Happy weekend wishes to you all.

Here's Lola - Our beautiful Jigsaw piece eating puppy.

Fiesta Day Today.

Here in Spain we are having a local fiesta which mean I've got my little fella at home today.  It's a cold and reainy day with strong winds, so were not venturing out, other than to take the dog out to play.  She's still not able to go out for a proper walk yet so it's just running around the garden for her exercise.

Here's Jack enjoying his favourite Japonese meal (noodles)

So far this morning we've competed in Club Penguin sports day, tackled the jigsaw we started yesterday (1000 pieces), stopped the dog from eating at least 20 things she's not supposed to eat, watched Nick toons, saved a polar bear and climbed a pyramid whilst fighting off mummies.  I wonder what the rest of the day will bring.

In between all our excitement I managed to write an article you might enjoy reading.  Tips to create peaceful school mornings.

Hypnosis Help with First Day at School Anxiety

My own son was three year old (far too early in my opinion and I would never do this again.  I just went along with the rules at the time) when he started school.  I loved having my son at home with me and was devastated when he started school.  It took my son weeks to settle into school and I remember crying most mornings.

My friends ay HypnosisDownloads.com have created a wonderful download First Day at School Separation Anxiety

I wish I'd had this.  I know this will be a wonderful resource for parents and children facing this challenging time later this year.

I'm a huge fan of Hypnosis downloads and over the past few years have built up quite a library to help me live a wonderful life.

Positive parents and kids update

Wow, it's already February.  As you can see it's been a while since I last posted.  It's been a busy couple of months.  I've been busy with my coaching work and family life.  I'm also writing a lot for suite101.  I'm loving writing daily as this is something I haven't done for some time.  My articles are a mixture of life skills, personal development, law of attraction, paenting, etc.

You can go to my profile page at http://www.suite101.com/profile.cfm/763616

New Puppy

Well it's been a roller coaster ride with our lovely new puppy Lola.  We got her from the local dog rescue center.  She's five months old and a labrador/pointer cross (we think).  We had her her in our home for just 6 days before she had to have a stay at the vet's.  She had parvovirus which is an incredibly dangerous dog illness.  The vet explained the situation and there I was with our new puppy that Jack (age 9) had bought with his own money, being asked if I wanted to go with the treatment which I was told could easily result in her dying and was very expensiveor we could put her to sleep there and then.  Needless to say I was in floods of tears.  We had to give her a chance.  The first 72 hours were critical to her survival.  We said we had to give her at least the 72 hours.  So she stayed at the vets on a drip to make her better.  We visited her often and prayed she would be home healthy and strong soon.  We said positive affirmation and visualized her running around the garden.
I'm happy to say after the 72 hours were up she had made a full recovery and is now home, happy and healthy.  She's one very loved puppy.  Now we just need to work out how to convince her 5.30am is not playtime in our home.  Any ideas?

Books

I love books and I'm delighted to say Jack share my passion.  He's a book fanatic.  I wanted to tell you about a brilliant book I bought him for Christmas.  It's the Nat Geo Kids infopedia (almanac in USA) and it's absolutely packed with the most wonderful information.  It's the sort of book that all ages love and you can pick it up for a couple of minutes or an hour.  If your kids love information and books this one is a must.

I got my copy from Amaon.co.uk but I know it's available on Amazon.com too.

This is the same one on Amazon.com

They do new ones every year and we got last years when we were in Florida on holiday.  He's usually got them both either in the car or at the side (or in) his bed.

Well, I'd better get myself moving.  The sun has finally come out so I'd better go and put the washing out.

Happy Parenting.

Guaranteed to Help Your Kids Live a Happy Life! (new video)

Wow, I can't believe we've been given yet another free video from the people at Happier Kids Now.
Every morning before they leave for school, single dad Patrick McMillan and his two boys, Liam (9) and Hayden (12) do this one Gratitude Activity.

Listen to Patrick tell you all about it in his new video (it’s only 4 minutes):

http://www.happierkidsnow.com/cmd.php?Clk=3931076

Do they miss a morning here and there? Occasionally. But for the most part, this is their practice.

They each own a “Gratitude Journal” and every morning they think of five to ten things they are grateful for and write it down.

This is a great way to start your day. Try it – you will be amazed at the difference it makes in your mood. Then you can teach this simple process to your kids.

Just imagine if we started teaching our children how to focus on what they are grateful for. By the time they got to be teenagers, perhaps it would seem like second-nature.

Did you know it’s been scientifically proven that people who do this one Gratitude activity…

**Live longer

**Experience less illness

**Have longer lasting and more meaningful relationships

**Are more successful in business and academics

**Enjoy a greater satisfaction with their life

Find out what Gratitude Activity this is by watching the video so you can help your kids develop life-long habits of gratitude.

Confidence is Growing

I'm feeling very pleased with my little man this morning.  He decided he wanted to walk to school by himself.  Well when I say that, what I actually mean is I drive him to school (we live too far from school to walk or bike) and park up in the nearby car park.  I walked with him to the crossing by the school and then he went in by himself which meant he also had around 10 minutes in the playground by himself.

For Jack this is a major breakthrough and a sure sign of growing confidence.  I have to say I thought I could be walking him into school at 16.

But you know what that would have been fine too.  All kids are different and that's how it should be.  Who wants a load of clones?  Sure most of the kids have been going in by themselves for ages now but there are still others who want their parents to wait with them.  Our children will be adults before we know it.  There's no rush.

Please don't rush your children into growing up.  They will do it when they are good and ready.  They will feel good about the move from little kid to big kid and so will you, even if the thought of them no longer needing you is a little scary.

Confidence building tips:
  • Let your child know you support their choices
  • Encourage your child to be himself/herself
  • Encourage your child to talk about friends, school, likes, dislikes, feelings...
  • LISTEN.  Letting your child know they are important enough to give them all of your attention for a while gives kids a huge confidence boost.
  • Make things fun
  • Give lots of genuine praise

Goals For Kids

Now is a great time to help your kids set goals for the coming school year.  I've been using GO FOR GOALS for a couple of years now and Both my son and I love the fun exercises.

As a law of attraction coach and an LOA MUM I have often thought about writing an E-Book for childen but I have to say I'd rather just tell you about this E-Book instead.  It's brilliant and it works.

I became an affiliate for Go for Goals shortly after I started to use it with my own son.  I was that impressed.  So this is how it works.  I tell you how great it is, if you like the sound of it click on the image below or this link http://tinyurl.com/ykps7ct you can read more information about the E-Books and if you decide to buy them I get a thank you cheque for telling you about Go for Goal.  So I'm happy and I'm pretty sure you'll be happy too.

You win and I win. Most importantly our kids win.

So what have you got to loose, click on the image or link to read more.

You Are The Best Person To Decide What's Right For Your Family

You know what?  When I was a new mum I was bombarded with information on how to be the best parent.  I had well meaning advice from friends, family and of course the professional advice from the health visitor.  You get the idea I'm sure.

Result - A very confused new mum.

I tried to do what I thought other people expected me to do.  I did this for the first 4 years of my sons life before I woke up and realised that I didn't need to try and please anyone else.

My point is, as parents we are the best people to know what is right for our families. Once I worked that out I became a much happier mum.

You see what's right for the super mum next door and her perfect family is not what's right for you.  And what was right for your own parents almost certainly will not fit with your own family.  I had a great childhood and great parents but that still doesn't mean their way works for me and my family.

Do what works for you and your family and enjoy being the best parent you can be for YOUR KIDS.

Discipline - My Style

Wow, I can't believe we're already in September.  Although I have to say I'm thankful for the slightly cooler weather now.  I hope your still enjoying what's left of the summer holidays.

I was asked to write a series of How To... articles recently.  The idea is that the company gives me a title and I write an article for them.  I had 3 articles to complete this week.  The first two were no problem but the final one took a lot more though for me.  You see the title was HOW TO DISCIPINE CHILDREN.  I have to admit this is not an article title I wouyld ever have chosen myself but that's what it was and I needed to write an article.
After several false starts I eventually wrote, what I conscider to be a great article.  Today I want to share a brief outline of "My style of discipline for children."

  • Only you know what works in your family and what's important to you.
  • Decide what is important and make them ground rules
  • Let your children know what the ground rules are.  Be clear about what you want
  • Be flexible (OCCASSIONALLY the ground rules can bend)
  • Be fair
  • Praise your child
  • Lead by example (be a great role model)
  • Make time for fun
  • Make time to really listen
If your child does misbehave:
  • Look at your own behaviour first.  Is your child reacting to your behaviour?
  • Do they need something?  Food, drink, a hug, sleep...
  • Tell them what you want and keep repeating/reminding.
  • Find out why?  Sometimes your child will simply find what they are doing fun.  If it's not okay with you explain why.
  • Say thank you for the behaviour you want
  • No means No.  If you say no, then mean it and stick to it.
  • Time out.  Time away from what they want to do in a safe place next to you, to calm down.
  • Reminder of what you want
  • ALWAYS treat your child with LOVE, KINDNESS and RESPECT
For me the last point is the most important.  Always treat your child with love, kindness and respect.  This is the way they learn to treat you, their friends and others they meet the same way.

I really hope you enjoy today's post.  As always please feel free to contact me on wendy@loaliving.com

Go With The Flow

Wow, what a great day we had yesterday for JM's birthday.  It was a day of allowing for me.  I have to admit I normally want everything planned but this year I decided to go with the flow.  Nothing happened the way I thought it would but that was okay.  The party started at 1pm not 1.30 as I had planned and that was okay.  Some people arrived very late and that was okay.  Some people didn't stay as long as we expected and that was okay too.  The party went on until 6pm and JM told me it was the best birthday ever.
When we allow the Universe to deliver what it knows to be the best for us instead of having to do what we think is best for us we have an AWESOME TIME.

Thank you Universe.
